How to Cope with Problems: Why Prayer is Better Than Food

Extra food does not solve problems, but that's how I dealt with many of my issues in the past. I have heard people say that extra food provides comfort, and I have experienced that as well. However, the comfort is short-lived and is often followed by guilt, shame, and pain. We have felt the consequences through weight gain, physical discomfort, and health problems. In reality, we only add to our problems by overeating.

I understand! I have been there. I’m so thankful to have found a 12-step program that helped me lose weight and keep it off for over 16 years. I learned to rely on God to help me resist food temptations and to deal with my problems in healthier, more Biblical ways.

As James 5:13-14 reminds us, “Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them.” This verse highlights the power of prayer and support from our community.

The support I received from friends in my group was invaluable, and I formed life-long friendships. A group of friends who can support and pray for each other is truly a blessing from God. I pray that everyone who struggles with food addiction and overeating can find the support they need to make lasting, healthy changes. Have problems? Try prayer instead of extra food. It works!
