The Lord Preserves the Unwary

Person in red jacket hikes on rocky mountain trail. Text reads, "The LORD preserves the unwary. Psalm 116:6." Rugged landscape backdrop.

I read Psalm 116:6 the other day, and the word “unwary” really hit me.

“The LORD preserves the unwary;

I was brought low, and He saved me.” (Psalm 116:6)

So I looked up what unwary means.

Unwary means:

  • not on guard

  • unsuspecting

  • vulnerable

  • not cautious

  • simple / inexperienced

In other words… someone who isn’t prepared for the battle.

And the verse says:

✅ God preserves that person.

✅ God protects that person.

✅ God saves that person.

This is such a comfort because so many of us carry quiet shame when we feel weak.

We think:

“I should know better.”

“I should be stronger by now.”

“I should have more self-control.”

But Psalm 116 reminds us that God doesn’t only help the strong. He watches over the vulnerable.

And if you’ve ever felt “brought low” — emotionally, spiritually, or in your health journey — this verse is for you:

You’re not disqualified. You’re cared for.
