Overeating Isn't Just a Willpower Problem

Many people believe that overeating is simply a willpower problem.

If someone would just try harder…

be more disciplined…

or “get serious” about their health…

they could stop.

But after walking alongside people in recovery for years, I’ve seen something different.

Many people struggling with food are not lacking motivation.

They are often:

• Carrying stress, grief, or loneliness

• Using food as a coping mechanism

• Feeling shame after years of failed dieting attempts

By the time they reach out for help, many already feel discouraged and defeated.

This is one reason recovery support can be so powerful.

When people realize they are not the only one struggling, shame begins to loosen its grip.

And when recovery includes faith, community, and structure, something begins to shift.

People stop fighting alone.
