Putting God First in All Things - Even Recovery from Overeating

Julie and Tony Kleinhans, hosts of the Reshape and Recover podcast, smiling together with the episode title "Putting God First in All Things — Even Recovery."
Putting God First — Even in Recovery

When we truly put God first, it changes everything — our mindset, our cravings, even our relationships.

Too often, we treat recovery like a side project — something we try to manage in between all of life’s other responsibilities. But the truth is, real healing and lasting change don’t happen by squeezing God in around the edges. They begin when we make Him the center — even in the small things, like what we eat, how we react to stress, and how we talk to ourselves when we mess up.

In this episode, Tony and I talk honestly about what it looks like to seek first the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). Not just on Sundays or during crisis moments, but in the everyday, seemingly ordinary decisions we make — especially when it comes to food and recovery.

✔️ What do we choose to eat — and why?

✔️ Do we respond to stress by turning to God… or to food?

✔️ Are we believing truth or letting lies take root in our minds?

✔️ Are we trying to control everything — or learning to trust?

When we start putting God first in these areas, everything begins to shift. We stop obsessing over the number on the scale or the food we ate last night. We begin to experience peace, even when we don’t do things perfectly. And over time, shame is replaced with joy as we walk in daily surrender instead of willpower.

We're not claiming to have this all figured out. Far from it! But we’ve experienced the transformation that comes when we give God our whole selves — not just our church life, but our struggles too.

If you’re feeling stuck in the same cycle and wondering what’s missing, this episode is for you.

Let’s walk this road of faith and recovery together. 💜
