Is It Hunger... or Something Else

Have you ever found yourself looking for something to eat when you know you're not physically hungry?

I've certainly been there.

During the years I struggled with overeating, I didn't always stop to think about *why* I wanted to eat. I just knew I wanted food.

Over time, I began to recognize that physical hunger and the desire to eat aren't always the same thing.

Sometimes we're stressed, lonely, tired, anxious, bored, or simply looking for comfort. Food may make us feel better temporarily, but it can't satisfy the deeper need underneath our desire to eat.

A Different Kind of Hunger

Psalm 42:2 says:

“My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God.”

I love the picture this verse gives us.

We understand what it feels like to be physically hungry or thirsty. But we can experience spiritual and emotional hunger, too.

And sometimes we try to satisfy those deeper hungers with food.

Food may distract us for a little while, but eventually the uncomfortable feeling returns—because food wasn't what we really needed.

Ask Yourself One Question

The next time you feel drawn toward food when you aren't physically hungry, pause before you eat and ask yourself:

**What am I really hungry for?**

Maybe you need rest.

Maybe you need to talk to someone.

Maybe something is bothering you that you need to work through.

Maybe you need to pray and spend some time with God.

Recognizing the real need gives us an opportunity to respond to it instead of automatically turning to food.

I talk a little more about this in the short video above.
