Making Amends: The Power of Step 9

Writer's picture: Julie KleinhansJulie Kleinhans

Making the amends in Step 9 is one of the hardest—and most healing—steps in recovery:

For years, I carried the weight of my past—broken relationships, hurtful words, and regrets I wished I could erase. But I’ve learned that true healing isn’t just about asking God for forgiveness—it’s about making things right with others when possible.

Making amends isn’t about fixing every mistake or expecting others to forgive us. It’s about taking responsibility, humbling ourselves, and allowing God to restore what’s broken—whether that’s a relationship, our own peace, or our ability to move forward.

Sometimes, amends means a heartfelt apology. Other times, it’s living differently, showing through our actions that we’ve changed. Either way, Step 9 is a step toward freedom—freedom from guilt, shame, and the burden of the past. One less reason to turn to food for comfort.

If you’re on this journey, don’t be afraid. God walks with you, and healing is possible. 💙
