Overcoming Anxiety Without Turning to Food

Have you ever found yourself standing in front of the pantry... even though you weren't really hungry?

I've done that more times than I'd like to admit.

What I've learned is that sometimes what feels like hunger isn't physical hunger at all. It's anxiety.

It can be stress about work, relationships, finances, health concerns, or simply the pressures of everyday life. Instead of recognizing those feelings, we reach for food, hoping it will bring relief.

One practice that has helped me is taking a 15-minute pause before eating when I'm not sure whether I'm truly hungry. During that time, I pray, ask God what's really going on in my heart, and wait before making a decision.

Many times, I discover that I wasn't physically hungry at all—I was anxious.

God offers us something food never can: His peace.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Philippians 4:6–7

Tony and I talk more about this in this week's Reshape and Recover podcast, "How to Overcome Anxiety Without Turning to Food." We discuss practical, biblical ways to recognize false hunger, replace worry with prayer, and find lasting peace in Christ.
