Step 10: A Different Way to Live

Person in blue jeans and white sneakers walks across river stepping stones; text reads The 12 Steps, Our walk with God.

One thing I’ve learned in recovery is that little things can become big things when I let them pile up.

A resentment I keep replaying.

Something I said that I wish I hadn’t.

A mistake I’m embarrassed about.

An attitude I know isn’t helping me.

Before recovery, I could carry those things around for days—or try to quiet them with food.

Step 10 gives me a different way to live.

Instead of letting things build up, I can pay attention to what’s going on inside me. I can admit when I’m wrong. I can make things right when I need to. And I can bring it all to God instead of bringing it to the refrigerator.

I don’t have to handle recovery perfectly.

I just need to keep taking care of today.

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.”

— Psalm 139:23 NIV

That kind of daily honesty has become an important part of my recovery—and my walk with God.

If you’d like to learn how I use all 12 Steps in recovery from overeating and emotional eating, I walk through each one in my book, 12 Steps to Recovery from Overeating: A Christ-Centered Walk Through the 12 Steps.
