Two Simple Ways to Avoid Overeating at Restaurants

Eating out can be challenging when you're trying to overcome overeating. Restaurant portions are often much larger than we need, and it's easy to keep eating simply because the food is sitting in front of us.

But you don't have to stop enjoying your favorite restaurants!

Tony and I were at Red Robin recently, and I wanted a hamburger. Their hamburgers are huge, so I used a simple strategy that has helped me over the years.

I cut off about a third of the hamburger and pushed it to the side.

That way, I had already decided how much I was going to eat before I started. I didn't have to keep making that decision with every bite.

I also ordered a side salad instead of fries. Rather than pouring dressing over the salad, I dipped my fork into the dressing before taking each bite. I still enjoyed the flavor without using nearly as much dressing.

A bonus tip: I ordered water with lemon instead of soda. So much healthier!

These aren't complicated strategies, but that's the point!

After more than 18 years of recovery from compulsive overeating, I've learned that small, consistent habits can make a tremendous difference.

You don't have to eat everything you're served. You can enjoy your food and still stick to your plan.
