Why Trying Harder Doesn't Work

Man lifting weights on a gym floor. Text reads "TRYING HARDER JUST DOESN'T WORK." Website: reshapeandrecover.com. Emphasizes seeking help.

Have you ever thought:

“I just need more willpower.”

Many of us have tried to overcome overeating by:

• trying harder

• being more disciplined

• making better plans

And for a while, that may even work.

But when stress hits, the same eating patterns often return.

That’s because overeating is rarely just a willpower problem.

For many people, food has quietly become a coping mechanism for:

• stress

• loneliness

• grief

• discouragement

• or emotional overwhelm

Trying harder doesn’t address those deeper patterns.

With God’s help, it becomes possible to begin addressing the reasons behind our eating instead of simply trying to control the behavior.
