Step Five: The Freedom of Being Fully Known

Step Five asks us to do something incredibly brave — to share our story honestly with God and with a trusted friend. It can feel intimidating at first, but as I wrote in my book 12 Steps to Recovery From Overeating,

“This step can be scary initially but is actually very freeing.”


There is deep healing that comes from being fully known and fully loved. When we speak the truth about our past and someone listens with compassion instead of judgment, something shifts inside us. The shame loses its grip. The isolation begins to fade. And grace rushes in.
