The 12 Steps - Our Walk with God.

Have you ever felt weighed down by shame because of your eating choices—or even your failures in recovery? It’s easy to believe the lie that we’re “too broken” or “too far gone.” But Step 7 reminds us that this isn’t true.

In this step, we don’t come to God as failures. We come to Him as loved children, asking Him to remove what’s broken in us and replace it with His Spirit.

As I wrote in my book 12 Steps to Recovery from Overeating:

“We know we are loved children of God, washed clean by the blood of Jesus. Because of this truth, when we make a mistake, we can acknowledge it without thoughts of being a mistake.” — 12 Steps to Recovery From Overeating, by Julie Kleinhans

That’s the heart of Step 7. It’s not about trying harder—it’s about asking God to do what we cannot. When we humbly bring Him our shortcomings, He replaces them with the fruit of His Spirit: love instead of hate, peace instead of anxiety, gentleness instead of harshness, and self-control instead of indulgence.

Step 7 is where shame is silenced and grace takes over. It’s where God begins to transform our hearts so we can walk in freedom—one day, one prayer, one step at a time.

🙏 Are you ready to go deeper? You’ll find prayers, Scripture, and practical guidance for every step of recovery in my book, 12 Steps to Recovery from Overeating.
