Step 9: Finding Peace Through Making Amends

ree

Have you ever carried the weight of guilt — not just in your body, but in your heart?

Sometimes the heaviness we feel around food isn’t really about food at all. It’s about unresolved relationships, unspoken apologies, and unhealed hurts that keep us turning back to food for comfort.

We may not even be aware of its affects until after we have completed our Ninth Step, but Step 9 leads us toward freedom through the power of amends.

“Step Nine is often perceived as the scariest step to take. Realistically, however, most people find it a positive and freeing experience. It’s more than an apology. It’s making right the wrongs one has done to improve yourself and your relationship with others.”

—12 Steps to Recovery from Overeating, Julie Kleinhans

Making amends isn’t about reopening wounds; it’s about inviting God’s healing into the places where pain once lived. It’s taking responsibility for our part, releasing resentment, and allowing His peace to fill what guilt once occupied.

This step reminds us that “the God-sized hole we have been seeking to fill using food and destructive behaviors is now filled with the Holy Spirit.”

When forgiveness flows — both given and received — the weight lifts. Peace replaces shame. And lasting recovery begins.
