Step 12 is how you hold on to the freedom you’ve found by walking through the first eleven steps.
It’s what keeps the fire of recovery burning. But many people hesitate to share their stories because they don’t feel “finished” yet. Maybe you’ve still got some weight to lose, or you’re still struggling from time to time — and you wonder if you really have anything worth saying.
Here’s the truth: you don’t have to be a perfect model of recovery to tell your story. Our stories aren’t just about weight loss — they’re about finding freedom from the obsession with food and learning to live in God’s peace and grace every day.
As I wrote in 12 Steps to Recovery from Overeating,
“Telling our stories reminds us of where we were and how far we’ve come, and also that we do not want to go back to that type of eating or way of life.”
Every time you share your story, you remind yourself of what God has done — and you plant a seed of hope in someone else’s heart. You don’t have to push or preach; just be honest about what recovery looks like for you.
So don’t wait until everything looks perfect. Tell your story today — because it’s not really about perfection; it’s about progress, gratitude, and the freedom that comes from walking daily with God.
