Step One: The Beginning of Hope

Person walking on stone steps in a river. Text: "The 12 Steps, Our walk with God." Calm setting with lush greenery.

When I first came to Overeaters Anonymous, I thought Step One was just about admitting I had a problem with food.

But it’s more than that.

True recovery begins when we recognize that this isn’t just a lack of willpower — it’s an addiction. For me, that addiction was to sugar and junk food. Until I believed that, I kept thinking I could manage it or “just eat a little.”

I floundered for over two years before hearing Bill W’s story from Alcoholics Anonymous. As I listened, I realized his story was just like mine — only his addiction was alcohol, and mine was food.

That’s when everything changed. I finally understood why I couldn’t control it. I had to admit my powerlessness — and that’s where God met me.

There is real hope in the 12 Steps, in the love of a supportive community, and most of all, in God’s power to transform our hearts and our habits.

Step One isn’t the end — it’s the beautiful beginning of freedom.

💛 If you’re ready to take that first step toward lasting change, come join us at Reshape and Recover — where faith and recovery meet — for just $12/month.

That’s probably less than you spend at a fast-food restaurant each month!
